About this person:

Richard Whately, Archbishop of Dublin and Professor of Political Economy at the University of Oxford following Nassau Senior, brought logical clarity to the previously murky relationship between morals and the underpinnings of economics. Whately was a prodigious writer who was active in political, economic, and ecclesiastical reforms, especially the education of children and poverty in Ireland. His broad interests ranged beyond religion and economics into logic, politics, social rights, and literary reviews. He was succeeded at Oxford by J. E. Cairnes.
